Belgian incubators in the picture: Four recommended Brussels-based incubators
Incubators are excellent workplaces for startups that want to grow in the long run.
They generally offer a wide range of services to make your life on the workfloor easier: housing, reception, internet access, networking activities, analyses of your business model, financial planning, different kinds of audits, and so on. In an incubator, you can focus on your own startup in order to develop it further, as if it were an egg ready to be hatched. Today, we focus on four incubators in Brussels.
First and foremost, it’s important to know that incubators are not to be confused with accelerators. Companies mostly join an incubator for an unlimited time; they are free to enter or leave at any given time. The threshold to enter an incubator is also lower than when joining an accelerator program. An incubator is a good place to start networking, whereas an accelerator program is a bit more intense and demanding. Incubators are an important stepping stone to success, while accelerators are for startups that are ready to take the next step.
For more information about Belgian accelerator programs, you can read our previous blog post here. Today, we recommend four Brussels-based incubators where you get the space to develop your company to reach its full potential: ICAB, BLSI, Greenbizz and EEBIC.
At Evoke, we’re situated in ICAB in Etterbeek ourselves. It’s the largest incubator in Brussels where startups mainly from the ICT and engineering sector take residence. ICAB offers private offices, co-working spaces, meeting and seminar rooms and a cafeteria to ensure a productive work environment. Besides the fully equipped workplace in a central location in Brussels, ICAB provides networking opportunities, personal advice, access to university collaboration with the VUB and expertise for each startup. For example, they help you with an analysis of your business model or market analysis, financial planning, etc. All in all, a great place to work and grow!
BLSI provides a workplace for up to 180 people in the life sciences sector. It is located in Woluwe St.-Lambert, near the campus of the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL). The incubator welcomes startups that work around e-health, medical equipment, biotechnology or are active in other technological sectors. These companies enjoy the infrastructure BLSI hosts, the offered customised support and the integration in the ecosystem of UCL research units. At the moment, 29 companies have taken residence in the BLSI where they make use of offices, laboratories, meeting rooms, relaxation areas and technical equipment.
At incubator Greenbizz in Laken, it’s all about sustainability. They are the first eco-responsible incubator in Belgium and offer young companies and startups a place to create and develop their project in the sustainable and circular economy. You can work in production workshops, modular offices or co-working spaces. Also included as part of the infrastructure are a reception, telephony, high-speed internet, furniture, conference rooms, relaxation areas and so on. Greenbizz not only offers infrastructure though, but high value services as well. You can receive tailored support and coaching from experts in the field, totally free of charge. The incubator provides an ecosystem and network in which you share a drive with many others to innovate towards a sustainable economy.
In 2015, EEBIC moved to a new building in Anderlecht which houses private offices, flexible co-working spaces and meeting rooms for around 350 entrepreneurs. Of course, it wouldn’t be an incubator if it only offered a place to work from. EEBIC actually has two complementary goals as a business incubator. Firstly, they rent out accommodation and secondly, they are an investment fund manager who can help tech startups to capitalize their potential. They establish an environment where companies are pushed to grow, thanks to B2B advice and consultancy services on a day-to-day basis. The incubator is easily accessible by car and metro. Facilities such as fitness, a relaxation room and a restaurant also contribute to the incubator’s appeal.
